The difference 7 years makes.

These photos are my hair loss journey over the last 7 years. I had to cut off my thick long beautiful hair, I didn't realise how much I loved it until it was gone. The first photo just months before it started to shed.

The second photo is of me in a wig, there are no photos of me during this time apart from a few sneaky shots my husband took. Over time it grew back slowly but well until.....

I started losing it again around 2 years later.

Photos 4 and 5 taken on the same day at different angles.

This time the loss was different, I had patches but it was diffuse and particularly bad around my temples, scalp and crown. Typical signs of androgenic alopecia. Whether I had alopecia areata that turned into androgenic or at the same time I will never know. All I know is that now it's whiter and thinner than it ever was.

I've had to get the know the person looking back in the mirror. I have very fair brows where I had dark thick brows, and thin white hair which people assume is white blond. To be very honest I've found it very hard to share photos, or do videos on social media as there is such incongruence between the person I look like on the inside and the person I see on screen now.

Why am I sharing this? I want you to know, that if you are going through anything like this that it not "just hair loss". It's identify change, and there are enormous challenges that come with that. For the first time I learned why monks and nuns shave their heads and the nature of attachment and self.

The process has been a form of grieving as well. I am not the same person I was before, how can I be? But I've taken it on the chin mostly with good humour. Its the only way! Though I have also had moments when I really feel that loss.

Who know's what it's going to decide to do next. At the moment it appears to want to have a dark quiff at the front 😂

Language holds power and words vibrate with the energy that has been absorbed from the culture around it. Things means different things to different people, based on their experience and culture.

When you say the word menopause what springs to mind? Your response will be unique, but the overarching cultural narrative is fear, worry, suffering, exclusion, loss of youth, disempowerment and diminishment.

But! You can change how you use the word and what it means to you. You have the power to recreate its meaning for you.

I've done this by changing the meaning of the word - I have used the word to create meno-pauses through the day...my mindful moments that help to create a deep sense of wellbeing and self-care.

Use this regularly and you will start to change your internal interpretation of menopause - each time you see the word you'll be reminded to take a meno-pause instead!

This is 52!

It's no secret I'm a Kylie fan... I was very lucky to see her on tour a few years ago and be right at the front in the VIP area thanks to a friend ❤️ When she's on stage it's like being in a big disco with all your best mates in the same room.

We all want positive role models, and she is definitely someone I would want a big night out with. She's had her share of adversity but she never seems to lose her sparkle.

Anyway, I love this shot I took of her in her emerald green glimmer, the tiniest human (she is really tiny!) commanding a huge stadium with elegance, cool and joi de vivre. For me it's a reminder that life will get back to normal and we can enjoy going out again, or at the very least to put on some disco and dance.

And honestly, this woman can MOVE!

Grounding is a fantastic tool during perimenopause

Grounding is a fantastic tool during perimenopause.

It's a way of just coming back to your centre when thoughts and feelings are flying around, you feel overwhelmed or just a way to connect and balance in any moment. It helps reduce stress and used regularly for work it can increase creativity by helping you stay focused. I even use it when I am playing tennis!

There are lots of ways that you can do this to help create a calm centre to which you can return to whenever you feel the need.

1. Sit or stand (it's important your feet are on the ground)
2. Take 3 deep breaths, see if you can make them slower and slower
3. Then notice your feet on the ground and where the soles of your feet meet the floor
4. With your next in-breath imagine that breath moving up through your body from the soles of your feet to the top of your head, as if it's a string pulling your up straight
5. Then as you breathe out notice that breath moving down through your body to where the soles of your feet meet the floor.
6. Notice that connection with the ground again
7. Repeat x5!

Words and meaning are so powerful aren't they? Ancient words used to describe women have moved from celebration to degradation. Crone, Hag and Witch are words that have been reshaped in fairy stories written by men, during the times of witch trials, taking root in our culture.

But there is a wave of women who are changing the narrative. They are planning this next incredible chapter of life, finding support, encouragement us and discovering others who sing the same song as them.

The tale is being rewritten.

Menopause can mean different things to different people. But did you know that what you believe about menopause can also shape your experience. This is true of everything.

Where focus goes energy flows.

If you want this chapter in your life to be the best it can be change your filter. It's a really powerful thing to do. It's not just about mindset it's about rewiring your brain. We are learning why and what you can do to activate your brain in way that supports you physiologically.

Think of your brain as a social media feed. You subscribe to accounts that support more of your belief, so that's what you see more of. If you focus on all the challenges and difficult aspects, then you notice them more in your daily life as well. This is confirmation bias.

Make your brain work for you in a positive way. If you want a positive menopause make sure that you are creating a positive internal narrative.
